The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating the death of an adult male following an officer-involved shooting in Winnipeg.
On October 2, 2024, the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) notified the IIU of an incident that occurred at approximately 12:30pm. According to the notification, WPS members responded to a call for service at an apartment building in the 800 block of Main Street. Police arrived on scene to find an armed male. A use-of-force encounter occurred, resulting in the discharge of a service firearm and the male being shot. Emergency first aid was administered. The male was transported to hospital in critical condition and subsequently succumbed to his injuries.
A team of IIU investigators was immediately deployed. As this matter involves a fatality, the IIU will request the Manitoba Police Commission appoint a civilian monitor.
