Portage la Prairie RCMP have arrested and charged a male suspect from the community after he attempted to make off with a municipal grader.

On January 27, 2025, at 9:40 m, Portage la Prairie RCMP received a report of a theft of a municipal grader in progress from the City of Portage la Prairie Public Works garage.

Officers responded to the scene and observed that the grader had crashed through a fence with the suspect still within the fenced compound near the machine.

Police say that the male suspect, 29-year-old Broderick Tkachyk from Portage la Prairie, refused to comply with officer demands and resisted arrest.

The suspect was eventually arrested and transported to the Portage la Prairie RCMP Detachment where, as a result of the altercation with officers and EMS personnel, the suspect, who was believed to be under the influence of a drug, was transported to hospital for examination for a non-life-threatening injury.

RCMP report that Tkachyk was treated and released from hospital and was remanded into custody on charges including operation while impaired, theft of a motor vehicle, assault on a police officer, and mischief over $5,000.
