A 37-year-old Selkirk woman has been arrested and charged in connection to a recent arson incident that occurred at her residence in the community.

Selkirk RCMP recently responded to a report of a house fire at a location on McLean Avenue in Selkirk. When officers arrived, Selkirk Fire Department and emergency personnel were already on scene. The home was fully engulfed in flames at this time.

Police say that the home-owner, a 37-year-old female, was outside the residence and not physically injured, but was taken to hospital as a precaution. The only occupants inside the residence at the time of the blaze was the owner’s two dogs and three cats.

Through initial investigation, RCMP discovered the female had intentionally set the fire. As a result, Leah Whitney-Brown was arrested and charged with arson, injure or endangerment of other animals, and causing animals unnecessary suffering.

The Office of the Fire Commissioner and Selkirk RCMP continue to investigate this incident.
