The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating serious injuries related to a recent Brandon Police Service (BPS) arrest of an adult male.
On February 20, 2025, the BPS notified the IIU of an incident that occurred on January 9, at approximately 1:13pm. According to the notification, BPS members were executing an order under the Mental Health Act at a home in the 1400 block of Applewood Bay in Brandon. As police approached the door, they observed the male holding two large objects. Officers advised the male they were taking him into custody. He turned and retreated into the residence.
Police confronted the man in the living room. A struggle ensued and a use-of-force encounter occurred. Officers handcuffed the man and placed him into the rear of a police cruiser, where he complained about pain in his ribs and said they were broken. He was transported to Brandon Regional Health Centre for X-rays on his ribs and later turned over to police.
As this incident involved serious injuries as defined under the IIU regulation, the IIU is mandated to investigate.
Witnesses or individuals who have information or video footage that may assist the investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
