Hanover School Division officially turned sod for construction of the new high school planned for Niverville. Held on site, the ceremony also included the unveiling of architectural drawings for the 66,700 sq. ft. facility. Scheduled to open in September 2019, the new school will serve up to 450 Grade 9-12 students.
Special guests of the Hanover School Division included Hon. Ian Wishart – Minister of Education and Training, Shannon Martin – MLA Morris, His Worship Myron Dyck – Mayor of Niverville, Michael Fritschij of MCM Architects Inc., Tony Bergagnini of Red Lake Construction, Pastor Jason Kehler of Fourth Ave. Bible Church, Members of Niverville Town Council, Representatives of the Public Schools Finance Board, and students from Niverville Collegiate Institute.
The turning of the sod featured Grade 9 Niverville Collegiate Institute students Hannah Dunn and Elijah Pastoor, who will be among the first students to enter the new high school in the fall of 2019. As previously announced, Mrs. Kimberley Funk has been appointed the first Principal of the new school. Mrs. Funk has been the Vice Principal of Landmark Collegiate since 2013, and will transition into her new role beginning February 2019.
Designed by MCM Architects Inc., the project will take 70 weeks to complete at a base cost of $18,450,000. Construction of the school will take place in two phases. The first phase will be completed by September 2019 and include all elements of the facility with the exception of the drama room, band room, and child-care facilities. School spaces not included in the first phase will be ready for use by the spring of 2020. Red Lake Construction will serve as General Contractor.
