A 17-year-old RM of St. Andrews teen has been arrested after trying to run down a Selkirk RCMP officer at a location off of Highway 204.
On June 10, just after 3am, a Selkirk RCMP officer attempted to pull over a pickup truck without licence plates that was on Sutherland Avenue in Selkirk, Manitoba. The pickup truck fled from the officer to a wooded, unmaintained trail off of Highway 204. The officer then followed the truck onto the trail on foot. When the officer engaged the driver of the truck and ordered him out of the vehicle, the driver accelerated at a high rate of speed toward the officer, pushing a downed tree into the officer, striking him in the leg. The driver backed up and again accelerated toward the officer, resulting in the officer discharging his firearm at the driver.
Police say that the vehicle then left the scene. Officers later found the vehicle abandoned, noticing that the suspect had fled on foot.
Investigation led police to arrest a 17-year-old male of the RM of St. Andrews. The teen is facing numerous charges including aggravated assault and assault with weapon. He is remanded in custody.
RCMP report that the suspect was not injured in this incident. The officer received minor injuries and was not transported to hospital.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba was consulted and RCMP Major Crime Unit continues to investigate.
