The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating a recent motor vehicle pursuit and collision on the north Perimeter Highway that resulted in injuries to a male suspect.

According to the Winnipeg Police Service, just before midnight on May 22, officers were dispatched to a robbery at which the suspects fled in a stolen vehicle. Around 1:30 a.m. on the 23rd, police observed the stolen vehicle in the area of Anderson Avenue and Powers Street and initiated a pursuit. While attempting to turn onto the exit ramp for southbound Main Street, the driver of the suspect vehicle lost control between the eastbound lanes of the Perimeter Highway and the southbound lanes of Main Street. The driver fled on foot but was quickly taken into custody after a brief foot chase.

The driver was conveyed to Health Sciences Center where it was determined he had sustained a collapsed lung and broken ribs as a result of the motor vehicle collision. He remains at hospital in stable condition.

As the individual was hospitalized, this meets the definition of a serious injury under regulations and, accordingly, the IIU is mandated to investigate.

Witnesses or other individuals who have information or video footage that may assist this investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
