The Manitoba Beef Producers’ (MBP) annual tour of the province begins this week on October 24, 2016.
The first of 14 district meetings is scheduled for Oct. 24 in Ashern and kicks off an important time for directors and staff as they meet with members to discuss the organization’s activities on their behalf.
“We strongly encourage all of our members to attend their district meetings,” said MBP President Heinz Reimer. “This is a member-driven association and their input is needed to help shape the association’s direction and focus. The meeting is also their opportunity to bring forward resolutions for the annual general meeting in February.”
Aside from the update on MBP’s activities and a review of the financial report, the meetings will include a discussion on growing Manitoba’s overall herd numbers and the programs and policies needed to help spark an increase.
“Recently Manitoba Agriculture Minister Ralph Eichler said he would like to see the province’s beef cow herd grow to 750,000 over the next decade,” Reimer said. “It is important for us to know what type of policies and tools members see as key to achieving this, be it targeted business risk management programs, enhanced lending tools, research into production efficiencies, a strong labour supply, sound water management strategies, access to Crown lands and community pastures or other needs. Member input on this subject would be very valuable”
Elections for directors will be held in odd-numbered districts this year. A new director will be selected for District 11 where current director Caron Clarke has reached her term limit and will be retiring.
There is no cost for members to attend the meetings. Each meeting begins at 6 p.m. and will include a free beef on a bun supper. A complete list of district meeting dates and locations can be found online.
