The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating the death of a 42-year-old male following an interaction with Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) officers just after midnight on August 2, 2019.
On August 2, WPS notified the IIU of an incident that occurred earlier that day at 12:37 a.m. Officers were called to a domestic incident on the 800 block of Consol Avenue in the Elmwood area. A male fled the residence and a foot pursuit ensued, ending in the 900 block of Consol Avenue. During the course of the arrest, the male was uncooperative and a taser was deployed. Shortly after being restrained, the male became unresponsive and was transported to St. Boniface Hospital where he was subsequently pronounced deceased.
Since this matter involves a fatality, a request for a civilian monitor will be made to the Manitoba Police Commission.
