The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating the circumstances that led to a 24-year-old male being hospitalized following his arrest by the RCMP.
On November 24, 2019, RCMP notified the IIU of an incident that occurred on November 23 in RCMP East District. At approximately 4:54am, police responded to a call for service regarding an impaired driver. Police located the male suspect and during the course of his arrest were required to use force in order to arrest him. The male was subsequently placed in a cell and advised police that he did not feel well. He was ultimately transported to the Health Sciences Centre, in Winnipeg and was admitted on an in-patient basis.
The male sustained internal injuries requiring admission to a hospital, which is defined as a serious injury under IIU regulations. Accordingly, the IIU is mandated to investigate these circumstances.
