The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) has charged a member of the Thompson RCMP with assault causing bodily harm following an investigation. The incident occurred in 2019 and involved the alleged assault of a 50-year-old male during his arrest.
The IIU issued its initial news release on July 10, 2019, advising that it had launched an investigation into an incident that led to the arrest and injury of a male.
The IIU has conducted a thorough and independent investigation into the circumstances of this incident. IIU Civilian Director Zane Tessler is satisfied there are reasonable and probable grounds to believe a criminal offence occurred and accordingly has authorized a charge of assault causing bodily harm under section 267(b) of the Criminal Code.
On January 7, 2020, RCMP Constable Jeremiah Dumont-Fontaine of the Thompson RCMP met with IIU investigators, was issued a summons and will appear in Provincial Court on February 25, 2020, in Thompson, Manitoba.
