The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating the death of a 44-year-old-female following her arrest by RCMP in Thompson.
On February 2, 2020, the RCMP reported an incident to the IIU that occurred on February 1. According to the RCMP, officers responded to an intoxicated person call, arrested a female and, once she was medically cleared, lodged her in cells in the RCMP detachment in Thompson around 8:15 p.m. According to the police notification, the woman was checked at 10:49 p.m. and found to be conscious and breathing. When she was checked again at 11:08 p.m., she was found unresponsive. EMS attended and pronounced the female deceased.
The IIU has assumed responsibility for this investigation in accordance with section 65(1) of The Police Services Act. As this matter involves a fatality, a request for a civilian monitor will be made to the Manitoba Police Commission.
