The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the arrest of a 26-year-old male that resulted in him sustaining a collapsed lung.

On November 13, 2020, the RCMP advised the IIU of an incident that occurred on November 12, at 11:28pm. According to the notification, Thompson RCMP were responding to a call for service regarding a domestic dispute. When officers attended on scene, a male suspect was located. The male became uncooperative and during the course of his arrest, a conducted energy weapon (CEW) was deployed and he was taken into custody. Thompson Fire and Emergency Services (TFES) attended to assess the male and transported him to the Thompson General Hospital (TGH) where he was later cleared and released into police custody. On November 13th, the male was brought to the TGH for further assessment. During his medical assessment, it was discovered that the male had a collapsed lung and he was admitted to hospital.

As an internal injury that requires admission to a hospital on an in-patient basis is defined as a serious injury under the IIU regulations, the IIU is mandated to investigate.
