Vaccine Administration

To date, 43,318 doses of vaccine have been administered including 32,852 first doses and 10,466 second doses. As of Feb. 2, Manitoba remains second in the country in the number of people who have received two doses of vaccine and are fully protected against COVID-19, at 759 per 100,000.

This week, focused immunization teams (FITs) will begin providing immunizations for vulnerable people in congregate living settings. Updates on the number of immunizations will be provided as they are available.

Manitoba continues to compile information about the number of first-dose immunizations given to personal care home residents. Information as of Feb. 2 indicates 8,255 residents were immunized. FITs will return to personal care homes beginning next week to provide second-dose immunizations.

On Feb. 1, the First Nations Pandemic Response Co-ordination Team and the Manitoba government provided an update on immunization plans to protect First Nations people. In total, 11,800 doses have been allocated to immunize First Nations priority populations. The province is also expanding its immunization efforts in Northern Affairs communities in the next two weeks, as well as a targeted immunization campaign in Churchill this week.

Super sites in Winnipeg and Brandon remain open for second-dose appointments only. The super site in Thompson opened on Monday to provide first doses to eligible Manitobans. Pop-up sites will launch in The Pas and Flin Flon next week. Vaxport in Thompson will be ready to open on Feb. 8 but will not begin providing immunizations until vaccine supply issues are resolved.

Workforce

To date,1,400 people have been hired to assist with Manitoba’s vaccination efforts at the sites in Winnipeg, Brandon and Thompson, and in other locations in anticipation of new sites opening as vaccine supply allows. This includes immunizers, clinic managers, clinical leads, system navigators and observers.

An additional 892 staff have been assigned to COVID-19 immunization efforts from regional health authorities, bringing the total of new hires and existing staff to 2,292. As more vaccine arrives in Manitoba, additional staff will continue to be hired to expand services.

Appointments and Eligibility Criteria

Eligible First Nations health-care workers can now call to make an appointment at a pop-up site that will launch in Winnipeg next week. Individuals who are eligible to make an appointment have received booking information from their employer and can begin calling today. As announced on Feb. 1, eligibility criteria for these appointments include:

  • health-care workers in non-remote First Nations communities, including health-care workers with direct patient/ client interaction, such as doctors, nurses, health-care aides, home care workers, medical transportation drivers, and other direct service providers;
  • First Nations alternative isolation accommodation workers at sites managed/ supported by First Nations organizations; and
  • Traditional Healers/ Knowledge Keepers, as they play a key role as part of the health workforce, to ensure those who did not meet the age criteria or who live off-reserve can also access vaccination if they choose.

All first-dose appointments available in Thompson, Flin Flon and The Pas have been booked.

Only second doses are currently being provided at the super sites in Winnipeg and Brandon. Manitoba is continuing to assess the effect of vaccine supply disruptions on these appointments. The province is committed to providing second-dose appointments within the recommended timeframe and will reach out to affected people by email or text to reschedule appointments if necessary. Plan to attend your second-dose appointments as scheduled unless you are contacted.

Vaccine Supply and Distribution

To date, a total of 57,990 doses of vaccine have been delivered to Manitoba. This includes:

  • 43,290 doses of Pfizer vaccine, based on six doses per vial; and
  • 14,700 doses of the Moderna vaccine.

This week, Manitoba expects to receive shipments of 8,100 Moderna doses and 2,340 Pfizer doses.
