Vaccine Administration

To date, 50,554 doses of vaccine have been administered including 33,930 first doses and 16,624 second doses. As of today, Manitoba remains second in the country in the number of people who have received two doses of vaccine and are fully protected against COVID-19, at 1,126 per 100,000.

Focused immunization teams expect to immunize approximately2,600 residents of personal care homes this week with their second dose of vaccine. All personal care home residents are expected to be fully protected against COVID-19 with a second dose by the end of the month.

The opening of Vaxport in Thompson has been postponed until March in response to vaccine shipment reductions and delays. However, it is ready to launch as soon as vaccine becomes available. As a result, its capacity to administer 402 doses of vaccine per day has added to Manitoba’s daily maximum capacity. Manitoba’s current capacity is now 7,499 doses per day. The province’s goal is to reach a daily maximum capacity of 20,000 by April 1 and progress is reported online in the COVID-19 vaccine dashboard.

Health Canada recently approved changes to count each vial of Pfizer vaccine as six doses, not five. While the longer-term vaccine delivery forecasts for Manitoba will not be affected by this change, it does reduce the number of vaccines Manitoba expects to receive by the end of March. As a result, Manitoba expects its plans to begin immunizing people over the age of 80 will be slightly delayed.

Workforce

To date, 1,093 people have been hired to assist with Manitoba’s vaccination efforts, including immunizers, clinic managers, clinical leads, system navigators and observers. This is in addition to 804 staff who have been assigned to COVID-19 immunization efforts from regional health authorities, bringing the total of new hires and existing staff to 1,897. The data reported today has been updated from previous bulletins to reflect the most current and accurate information available.

Appointments and Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility criteria for immunization have been expanded to include more health-care workers in acute care facilities, emergency response services and specialty patient transportation, and home care workers. Individuals born on or before Dec. 31, 1980, (expanded from 1975) can now call to book an immunization appointment.

First-dose appointments remain available in Winnipeg and Brandon. Eligible First Nation health-care workers can call to make an appointment at a pop-up site operating in Winnipeg and The Pas this week. The average wait time for those eligible to make an appointment by phone is less than one minute.

Eligibility criteria changes regularly. For complete and updated information on eligibility criteria, visit gov.mb.ca.
