Stonewall RCMP recently responded to an injured driver who had been struck by a piece of ice that had dislodged from a passing dump truck on Highway 6, approximately four kilometres north of the Perimeter Highway.

On April 19, 2021, at approximately 1:20pm, Stonewall RCMP received a report of an injured driver on Highway 6. When officers arrived on scene, EMS was providing care to a mane with serious, non-life threatening injuries.

Police investigation determined that a van, traveling south on Highway 6, was passed by a dump truck. When the dump truck was approximately two car lengths in front of the van, a chunk of ice flew off the back of the truck and broke through the windshield of the van, striking the 68-year-old male driver in the face and rendering him unconscious. The passenger, a 61-year-old woman, was able to handle the steering wheel until the vehicle came to a stop, thereby avoiding a collision.

RCMP report that the male driver was transported to hospital in Winnipeg, where he remains in serious but stable condition. Both occupants of the van are from East St. Paul.

Police say that the female passenger was very thankful for the help provided to her by other motorists who stopped to assist, as well as the first responders who attended to herself and the driver.

RCMP would like to remind everyone to ensure their vehicle is clear of snow, ice, and any other debris before heading out on the road. At highway speeds, debris on a vehicle can become a deadly force.
