The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal motor vehicle collision following an attempted traffic stop by Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) officers.
On October 4, 2021, WPS notified the IIU of an incident that occurred that day at 12:05 pm, when uniformed general patrol members attempted to stop a vehicle on Provencher Boulevard. According to this notification, the suspect vehicle accelerated away at a high rate of speed, and the driver lost control of the vehicle within moments. The vehicle then crossed the median and struck a westbound vehicle, killing that driver. The driver of the vehicle was arrested a short time later.
IIU is mandated to investigate all incidents involving police and a fatality.
