The Province through the Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) has officially requested the City of Steinbach to be ready as a host community for flood evacuees. The request involves asking members of the Steinbach community to sign up to billet evacuees as was done during the 1997 flood.
The City’s Emergency Coordinator, Denis Vassart, is asking Steinbach citizens who would host evacuees to identify themselves with the City, indicating how many people they would be willing to have in their home for a time that could exceed two or three weeks. Volunteers can sign-up by visiting City Hall at 225 Reimer Avenue; by calling 326-9877; or by filling out the form online.
Should the City have to provide congregate facilities at the arena or other venues, the Province – through either the Red Cross or the Federal Government’s National Emergency Stockpile System – would supply cots and blankets.
Similar to past years, EMO has indicated there is only a 10% chance that Steinbach will actually be called upon as a host community in a ‘worst-case scenario’ event that would cause mass evacuations.
Questions can be directed to Denis Vassart at dvassart@steinbach.ca or by calling 392-5996.
Please sign up now to be a Flood Evacuee Host Family by filling out the online form and submitting it by e-mail, or dropping it off at Steinbach City Hall, 225 Reimer Avenue; or by calling 326-9877.
The City of Steinbach thanks all billeting volunteers in advance for helping Steinbach be prepared should we become a host community.
