On March 22, 2011, at about 10:30pm, Gillam RCMP along with local Fire and EMS were dispatched to a fuel tanker collision about 50 km west of Gillam on PR 280.

RCMP attended the scene and learned that the driver of the fuel tanker was eastbound on PR 280 when he met an oncoming vehicle at the crest of a hill. The truck caught the edge of the road, the driver lost control and ended up on its side in the south ditch. The driver of the oncoming vehicle did not stop.

The truck driver, a 46-year-old man from Grand Rapids, was able to get a ride to Gillam, alert authorities and seek medical attention for minor non-life threatening injuries.

An estimated 3 to 6,000 litres of fuel spilled from the tanker truck.

At present, PR 280 is closed to traffic between Split Lake First Nation and Gillam. Environment Officials have been contacted and clean up is expected today.

The investigation continues.
