The City of Steinbach has agreed to prepare to become a host community and open a Reception Centre should spring flooding cause mass evacuations this year.
The City’s Emergency Operations Centre team is asking citizens willing to help at the Reception Centre to identify themselves with the City, indicating what tasks they can assist with as well as days and hours for which they would be available. Positions include refreshment servers, shelter services, information services, meet and greet personnel, and others. A complete listing is available here.
If opened, Steinbach’s Reception Centre would be housed in the Centennial Arena and hours of operation would be 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM, seven days per week. Volunteers can sign-up at Steinbach City Hall, 225 Reimer Avenue; by calling 326-9877; or by filling out the Flood Reception Centre Volunteer form.
Similar to past years, Manitoba Emergency Measures Organization has indicated there is only a 10% chance that Steinbach will actually be called upon as a host community should a flooding event occur that would cause mass evacuations. But if it should occur, the City of Steinbach wants to be prepared by having Reception Centre volunteers and host families in place.
