Manitoba Water Stewardship advises the Red River Floodway gates will be raised for the first time in 2011 at approximately 9 a.m., Saturday, April 9.
If unanticipated events occur that make it necessary to change this time, another public notice will be issued.
The gradual raising of the gates will protect Winnipeg while keeping river levels south of the floodway inlet at or below natural levels.
In accordance with floodway operating rules, the horn will be sounded at the inlet control structure at 8:30 a.m., one half-hour before operation of the gates.
Due to the anticipated floodway operation, the floodway control structure bridge and access road between Turnbull Drive and St. Mary’s Road has been closed.
Recorded information regarding floodway operations can be obtained from the Floodway information line at 204-284-4550. Additional flood information is also available at www.manitoba.ca/flooding.
