Steinbach RCMP wish to warn the public that a popular phone scam targeting seniors has surfaced in the Steinbach and surrounding communities.

RCMP report that the scam consists of seniors being contacted by people pretending to be a relative such as a grandchild. The caller will state that he or she is in trouble with the police and need money sent to post bail. The phone will then be given to a second person impersonating a police officer who will provide directions on how to send money.

Two incidents as mentioned above were reported in Steinbach within the last week. In both cases victims sent money, as much as $5,000, before being told that the situation was a fraud.

Steinbach RCMP are requesting that if you get any calls such as the one described above that you contact the nearest police detachment before you send any money. Police can make efforts to determine if the call is genuine.
