On February 14, 2009 around 2:30 AM Portage la Prairie RCMP received a complaint of a stolen vehicle in the RM north of Portage la Prairie.

The victim, a 31 year old man, was driving south on Rd 38 W when he saw a car pulled over to the side of the road near Rd 72 N. The victim got out of his vehicle and checked to see if the passengers in the car needed assistance. The victim was approached by two males who told him they were going to take his truck. The victim attempted to defend his property and a shoving match ensued. The struggle ended without any injuries, and the two suspects left in the victim’s pick up truck. The car drove off as well with at least one person inside. The victim then contacted police. The victim suffered no injuries but was taken to Portage General Hospital to be treated for exposure.

The suspects were described as native males between the ages of 20 and 25 years old. The first suspect was approximately 5’8”, stocky, had a broad face wearing a dark hoodie and lose pants with white skater style sneakers and a dark baseball cap. The second suspect was taller, about 6’3” with a distinct nose. The second suspect had short hair and was wearing a brown t-shirt, baggy blue jeans, and light coloured sneakers.

The stolen vehicle is a red 2003 Ford F350. The suspect vehicle was described as a light coloured early 2000’s model Chevrolet Impala.
Anyone with information about this incident are asked to contact the Portage la Prairie RCMP at 857-4445 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Update 02/17/09 11:52am

Portage la Prairie RCMP have determined that the events first reported to police in this incident were false allegations. No robbery took place and no vehicle was stolen. A 31 year old male did phone police for assistance, however he created the story of being robbed to cover up the fact that he had been drinking earlier in the evening, and now needed a ride as he was alone in the rural area without proper clothing. The discovery was made by investigators after re-interviewing the complainant, during which he told police about what had actually occurred.

Charges are being contemplated.
