Provincial officials have notified the City of Steinbach that it can stand down from its status as flood host community.
Earlier this spring, the City was asked to prepare to be a host community for flood evacuees. With the flood currently at its crest in many parts of the province, Steinbach has been notified that its services will not be needed.
The Citys Emergency Coordinator, Denis Vassart, said, It was encouraging to see many Steinbach citizens look for opportunities to help and sign up either to billet flood evacuees or as volunteers in the Flood Reception Centre. It is great to know we can count on our citizens for help should the need arise in the future.
Mayor Chris Goertzen said, We are all grateful that more lives were not disrupted by flood evacuations this spring. The citizens of Steinbach once again showed generosity in being willing to open up their homes to those who could have been in need.
Similar to past years, EMO indicated there was only a 10% chance that Steinbach would actually be called on as a host community should the flood have caused extensive mass evacuations.
The City of Steinbach extends sincere thanks to all volunteers who signed up to billet evacuees or to volunteer in the Flood Reception Centre had it been necessary.
