On February 18, 2009 around 7:30 PM Portage la Prairie RCMP responded to a call of a downed hydro wire in the back lane south of Saskatchewan Ave W.

Portage la Prairie RCMP, Portage Fire Department and Manitoba Hydro attended the scene in the back lane between 16th St. SW and 17th St. SW. The downed wire was live, and was on top of a garbage truck. There were two people in the truck at the time. MB Hydro turned off the electricity, and the driver was able to drive the vehicle out of harm’s way. There were no injuries and MB Hydro repaired the wire.

The wire involved was a supply wire that ran from the main lines bringing electricity to the building it was attached to. The wire is believed to have got caught on the top of the garbage truck as it drove underneath, which is the reason for the wire coming down.
