The Office of the Prime Minister announced this week that the Honourable Vic Toews, Canada’s Minister of Public Safety, will serve as the first Vice-Chair of the newly formed Cabinet Committee on National Security.
This new committee, chaired by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, will provide broad strategic direction on security and foreign policy related to Canada’s national interests, and oversee Canada’s national security planning and activities.
“Canadians elected a strong, stable, national government to make Canadian families safer in our communities,” said Minister Toews. “I am honoured to have been selected by Prime Minister Harper to play this important role in guiding our country’s approach to national security and foreign policy.”
Among Minister Toews’ Cabinet colleagues also named to the Cabinet Committee on National Security are:
• Justice Minister and Attorney General Rob Nicholson;
• Defence Minister Peter MacKay;
• International Cooperation Minister Bev Oda;
• Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird;
• Transport Minister Denis Lebel; and
• Immigration Minister Jason Kenney
It was also announced this week that Minister Toews will serve on the Cabinet Committee on Priorities and Planning and the Cabinet Committee on Social Affairs.
