Construction season is upon us again and many of the City of Steinbach’s 2011 projects are already underway.

Work began on Reimer Avenue last week with the renewal of the watermain between Spruce Crescent and the west leg of Pine Crescent. The project has been progressing nicely in spite of weather issues. Replacement of the sewer main has been completed from Henry Street to just east of Spruce Crescent. It is expected that the overlay and surface work should be completed by the end of June. The watermain renewal has also been completed on Pine Crescent and surface restoration is expected to take place early July.

Work has resumed on both the lagoon and landfill expansions. The lagoon is currently being dried out with the use of water pumps and discers. Two thirds of the cells are completed and, after the site is dry, the remaining third of the cells will be constructed. This work should be completed in June with the remaining touchups, seeding, and fencing completed in July and August.

A few sections of the landfill are also being dried out with the use of water pumps. Once the area is dry enough, extensive amounts of clay material will be brought in from the lagoon site to line the bottoms of the retention and sedimentation ponds, as well as to construct a keyway containment seal to hold in liquids from the waste disposal cells. Fortunately, the landfill is located on a clay foundation that acts as a natural barrier to any liquids, and this is what lies beneath the new waste disposal cells. The keyway seal will consist of a trench in each cell, lined with clay material, and a cut-off wall installed across the cell, resting in the trench, to form an effective liquid barrier. The anticipated completion date for the landfill expansion is September 2011.

Due to moisture issues, construction of the Deerfield Walkway has been delayed and is expected to begin the second week in June, weather permitting. This walkway will connect Hespeler Street North to Creekside Place in the Deerfield area.

Asphalt overlay will start on Willow Crescent the second week in June. Concrete work on the curbs will take place, followed by grinding down the existing surface and putting down new asphalt overlay. Chapel Drive will also be resurfaced beginning June 29, once school is finished for summer. All asphalt overlay work should be completed by August.
