Yesterday was the second anniversary of Steinbach’s Citizens On Patrol Program (COPP), and COPP Coordinator, Laurie McLean, wants the community to recognize the value of the program and the large need for more volunteers.
We have a very small number of volunteers for such a large location, said McLean, and in comparison to communities that are much smaller than ours. It would be great to see this program running at full capacity rather than our volunteers running at full capacity, as we want to have a sustainable program in our city.
The COP Program currently has eleven volunteers who patrol by foot, car, or bike to observe, record and report to RCMP any suspicious activity they see around the city.
McLean said, It’s a very devoted group of people we have. They are out there patrolling year-round, and I can only recall one shift cancelled due to a blizzard, and two due to electrical storms. Otherwise, they’ve put aside their own comforts of home and hit the streets of Steinbach.
McLean explained that all the volunteers agree this is a very rewarding way to contribute to the community.
I think everyone would agree that calling in to the RCMP with an issue that they are able to deal with does have a certain amount of satisfaction. It is a thrill to be able to help out in this way.
Staff Sergeant Davy Lee said, I would like to congratulate the Steinbach COPP program on another successful year. I know it takes a lot of energy to have the program up and running, and these volunteers deserve a pat on the back for dedicating their personal time to ensure our community is a safer place to be. To each of the volunteers, great job and I look forward to working with all of you in the coming year.
Mayor Chris Goertzen said, The COP Program continues to prove itself a valuable asset in keeping our community a safe place to live, work, and play. On behalf of City council and staff, I commend and thank each COPP volunteer for giving their time and attention to this worthwhile program.
The program would look to see at least thirty volunteers patrolling regularly. To learn more about Steinbach’s COP Program and how to get involved, go online or call Laurie McLean at 320-2911.
Barry and I both enjoy our work with the Steinbach COPP very much, said McLean, and we appreciate each and every one of our group making an effort to help out on a regular basis. It’s a pleasure to be able to give back to the community and to be able to contribute to the safety and well-being of the citizens of Steinbach. The rewards are endless.
