On June 25, 2011, at about 6:30am, Winnipegosis RCMP as well as local emergency services were dispatched to a complaint of an assault at a residence on Pine Creek FN.
On arrival at the residence, police discovered an unresponsive 24-year-old male. The man was transported by ambulance to Swan River Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
The name of the deceased will not be released at this time. An autopsy is scheduled for today.
The death is being treated as a homicide. No charges have been laid at this time.
The investigation is continuing with the assistance of the RCMP Major Crime Service and RCMP Forensic Identification Section.
Update 06/28/11 10:35am
RCMP investigators have charged 24-year-old Ryan Chartrand with second degree murder. The victim has been identified as 33-year-old Lance Richard. An autopsy has been completed, and the cause of death has been attributed to blunt force trauma. The victim and the accused were known to each other and are both from the Pine Creek FN. Chartrand has been remanded in custody and will appear in Dauphin Provincial Court at a later date.
