The province is partnering with Niverville Heritage Holdings Inc. and South Eastman Health/Santé Sud-Est to construct a new, 80-bed personal-care home in Niverville. This announcement was made by Health Minister Theresa Oswald.
“As our population ages, we will continue to see a need for a range of home and community supports including personal-care homes, home care and affordable housing options for Manitoba seniors,” said Oswald. “Long-term care is an important part of Manitoba’s health-care system and this project will help us meet the needs of people in the southeast part of the province.”
The current personal-care home in St. Adolphe was built in 1906 and a new facility is needed to continue to provide quality personal care for area residents over the long term, Oswald said. The community-owned Niverville Heritage Holdings, which owns the personal-care home in St. Adolphe, plans to replace the existing 42-bed facility with a new 80-bed facility in Niverville.
“This new facility will address the need for additional personal-care home beds as the population ages, while reducing the disruption of services and the effects on the lives of residents by moving the facility to a location less likely to be affected by flooding,” said Local Government Minister Ron Lemieux at an event today in St. Adolphe. “I’m proud our government is continuing to move forward and investing in our renewed long-term care strategy to add hundreds of beds across the province.”
The province will provide an additional $1.7 million in new operating funds to support this project, which will include a special-care unit for residents with dementia, aggression and other challenging behaviours, he added.
“With this announcement today, Heritage Holdings will be able to complete its commitment to a fully integrated aging-in-place facility for seniors and those requiring personal care in Niverville and the southeast region,” said Gordon Daman, president of Niverville Heritage Holdings. “The leadership the province has shown by including funding for a special-care unit is truly inspiring. This unit will ensure that the special needs of not only residents in the southeast but south Winnipeg will be met in a holistic care setting.”
The new facility will be built next to the Niverville Heritage Centre, an 80,000-square-foot complex that is home to a primary health-care centre, a medical clinic, physiotherapy and dental clinics, a daycare and an event centre. It will also be next to the Niverville Credit Union Manor, an assisted-living and supportive-care residence for seniors and people with disabilities.
“The Niverville personal-care home will help South Eastman Health address health-care needs for the fastest-growing region in Manitoba,” said John Stinson, chief executive officer of South Eastman Health-Sante Sud-Est. “This new facility will go a long way towards reducing personal-care home wait lists in our region and the region looks forward to continuing our partnership with Niverville Heritage Holdings Inc.”
Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2011 with a targeted completion date in 2013.
