On Sunday February 22, 2009 shortly after 8 p.m., 28-year-old Joseph Ramsey McKay of Berens River, Manitoba was struck and killed by a motor vehicle on the Jackhead Road about 1 kilometre south of the Jackhead First Nations Reserve.
RCMP Fisher Branch Detachment were dispatched to the scene and to date the investigation shows McKay had left the reserve on foot shortly before the collision. The 69-year-old male driver from the Jackhead First Nations Reserve was driving a Chevrolet Venture van when the collision occurred. The driver of the van was taken to hospital at Hodgson, following the collision by paramedics where he remains in good condition. The driver was not under the influence of alcohol.
The Jackhead Road was closed for several hours while police, including an RCMP collision analyst, investigated the scene.
An autopsy has been ordered by the Chief Medical Examiner’s office and is scheduled this morning (February 24th) at the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre.
Fisher Branch R.C.M.P. are continuing their investigation. It is too early to comment on whether Criminal Code or Highway Traffic Act charges will be pursued.
