On February 24, 2009, at 7:20 a.m., Thompson RCMP were notified of a death that occurred underground at the Vale Inco nickel mine site in Thompson, Manitoba.
A 53 year old INCO employee, of Thompson, was reported overdue at a regular check-in time in the underground work area. He was located and found deceased. The deceased’s name is withheld for notification of next of kin. Foul play is not suspected at this time.
Thompson RCMP are continuing to investigate in coordination with Workplace Safety & Health.

Mine Death Determined to be Result of Explosion. RCMP investigation into the death of a 53 year old man at a minesite in Thompson on February 24, 2009, has revealed that he died as the result of an explosion. In consultation with the Medical Examiner and Workplace Safety & Health, the RCMP are still investigating the precise circumstances leading to the explosion.
