On July 10, 2011, shortly after 1pm, Thompson RCMP Detachment received a report from a civilian advising a canoe had capsized on the river downstream from the Notigi Dam, about 45 minutes north of Nelson House FN, off of Highway 391.
RCMP Officers from Thompson RM and Nelson House Detachments immediately attended the location, searching for the two men. Assisting in the search were civilians, who were on scene fishing. An RCMP boat and a chartered helicopter were also sent to assist, searching the water as well as along the shorelines.
RCMP confirmed that two brothers, ages 42 and 43 years old and current residents of Thompson were fishing from a canoe when it capsized sending both men in the water. Both disappeared under water and out of sight. Life jackets were not in use when the canoe capsized.
While various items were recovered on shore, the canoe or its two occupants have yet to be located.
RCMP report that the water is considered very turbulent at the location.
RCMP continue to search the river for the two men.
