On July 28, 2011, at 4am, Island Lake RCMP Detachment were advised that the RCMP truck stored at the Manitoba Hydro compound in Red Sucker Lake was on fire.
Island Lake Detachment members flew into the community and began an investigation. It was established that the police truck, a 3/4 ton Chevrolet pick-up truck, had been intentionally set on fire.
Five youths from Red Sucker Lake, ages 14 to 17, have been arrested and will faces charges of arson, attempting a break and enter to a building on site, as well as mischief over $5,000. They have been released on undertaking with conditions to attend court in Garden Hill FN, on August 17, 2011.
The loss of this asset is estimated at $20,000. It is considered a total loss. This was the only police vehicle on site as this is an isolated community policed from Island Lake Detachment. RCMP are making arrangements so that this incident does not impact on police response and public safety.
The crime is considered gang related.
