An employee at Stony Mountain Institution faces charges after being investigated for smuggling drugs into the Institution.
On July 26, 2011, at about 9:30am, Stonewall RCMP Detachment were contacted by Stony Mountain Institution (SMI) officials and advised that an employee was attempting to smuggle drugs into the Institution.
RCMP attended the Institution and during the course of the investigation seized cash, a variety of pills, marijuana and what appeared to be crystal meth, along with other items from a vehicle parked outside the penitentiary registered to the employee of the Institution.
It is believed that the employee received money to smuggle drugs and various goods into the institution.
On July 26, the employee was arrested and later released on a Promise to Appear to attend Stonewall Court on September, 19, 2011.
On August 4, 2011, the employee, identified as 57-year-old John Wallace Lightfoot of Stony Mountain, was charged for four counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking. The charges relate to the possession of marijuana, morphine, crystal meth and ecstasy.
Lightfoot is a mason instructor at the Stony Mountain Institution.
The value of the items seized is estimated at $52,000 inside the institution.
Stonewall RCMP Detachment, with the collaboration of the Stony Mountain Institution, continue to investigate.
