The search for a missing swimmer in a Dauphin gravel pit continues after RCMP were notified of the incident this past weekend.
Just after 5pm on August 21, 2011, emergency personnel were called to a gravel pit in the RM of Dauphin southeast of the Village of Sifton. RCMP officers from the Ethelbert and Grandview detachments, fire fighters from the Sifton and Dauphin Fire Departments and Paramedics from Dauphin attended the call.
RCMP report that a group of people had been swimming at the pit when one of the swimmers went under the surface and did not come back up. Search efforts Sunday evening failed to locate the missing man.
Search efforts resumed this morning. RCMP divers have been called to assist in the search. The missing swimmer has been identified as a 20-year-old Dauphin area man.
Update 08/23/11 7:30am
The body of the missing swimmer was recovered by divers around 7:30pm last evening. At the request of the family, his name is not being released. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed today. Foul play is not suspected.
