On March 4, 2009 at about 10:40 a.m., Gimli RCMP Detachment were dispatched to a School Bus roll-over 4 miles north of Gimli on Provincial Road 222.

The bus is reported to be a Charter bus out of Winnipeg carrying 40 students from the Pembina Trails School Division which was en-route to Camp Arnes. This is a single vehicle roll-over.

Everybody has been accounted for on scene with Gimli EMS treating one student still on the bus with undisclosed injuries. At this point it does not appear that any of the injuries are life threatening.

Road conditions in the area are extremely icy.

More information will follow as it becomes available.

Update 03/04/09 1:50pm:

At this point in time, RCMP Gimli Detachment report that 10 children have been taken to the Gimli Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  The grade 6 students from the Beaverlodge Elementary School have been taken to the George Johnson Middle School in Gimli for triage.

Indications are at the scene that the driver lost control of the bus, coming out of a bend in the road, at which point the bus spun and ended up in the ditch on its side.  Road conditions are considered a factor in this collision.

The investigation continues.

Update 03/04/09 4:38pm:

RCMP can confirm that a charge of Imprudent Driving, sec 95(3) of the HTA was laid against the bus driver who is a 61-year-old Winnipeg resident.  A total of 13 children and 3 adults received medical treatment.  Two of those youth are being transported to the Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg for further treatment.  None of the injuries reported are considered life threatening.
