Wind turbines will now provide Providence University College with nearly half of its energy needs. The Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety and Member of Parliament for Provencher, toured the college’s newly refurbished campus, which received support from the Government of Canada.
“This investment created jobs at a critical time for Manitoba’s economy while improving the infrastructure that Providence University College will need to maintain its reputation as an advanced education leader,” said Minister Toews. “Our government’s support for the knowledge economy has not only made a difference in the short term but also set the foundation for future prosperity.”
The Government of Canada invested $557,000 in two construction projects at the campus through its Knowledge Infrastructure Program. The college provided matching funding while the Province of Manitoba, Manitoba Hydro and the Buller Foundation all contributed additional funding.
The addition of wind power to the campus’s existing geothermal heating and cooling system will further reduce the college’s carbon footprint while a new lecture theatre and seminar rooms for distance learning will expand the college’s reach.
In Manitoba, the federal government has invested $71.7 million in 20 projects through the Knowledge Infrastructure Program. The Province of Manitoba and other partners have invested an additional $116.8 million, for a total investment of $188.5 million.
The Government of Canada introduced the Knowledge Infrastructure Program,
a $2-billion economic stimulus measure to improve research and training facilities at Canadian universities, colleges and CEGEPs, as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The program
has provided economic stimulus, created jobs and generated the advanced technological infrastructure needed to keep Canadian institutions at the forefront of scientific advancement and ensure future economic growth.
