In the second week of March 2009, during Fraud Prevention Month, the RCMP will focus on counterfeit currency and credit/debit card fraud.

Statistics compiled by the RCMP National Anti-Counterfeiting Bureau show the number of counterfeit notes passed and seized in Canada
decreased by approximately 48 per cent from 322,501 in 2006 to 163,520 in 2007. The security features on genuine bank notes are reliable and quick and easy to use. Simply touch, tilt and look at and through a bank note to confirm it is genuine.

Credit card and debit card fraud often involves the theft of electronic data as a result of a skimming procedure. In addition to the electronic data, a debit card fraudster will also have to obtain the PIN. Fraudsters will use the stolen credit card or debit card data to gain access to the card holder’s account. Be diligent and protect your credit card and debit card data.
