On the morning of November 19, 2011, the RCMP Portage la Prairie responded to a call on Long Plain FN resulting in the discharge of a police firearm.

A 28-year-old male resident of Long Plain FN was transported to hospital to receive medical treatment. He is listed in stable condition.

The discharge of a firearm by a member in the RCMP is very uncommon and is taken very seriously. RCMP report that the Serious Crime Unit was on-site to coordinate the matter.

In accordance with RCMP policy that requires an external investigating agency, the Regina Police Service was asked and have agreed to conduct the investigation into this incident.

Two investigators of the Regina Police Service are being brought in to lead the investigation. The RCMP Serious Crime Unit will provide any assistance required.

Since this matter relates to a Manitoba First Nations, the RCMP has activated the public safety cooperation protocol in place between the RCMP and the Southern Chief’s Organization, Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) and the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs. The protocol is aimed at maintaining ongoing communication and liaison between parties by means of designated representative. As such, a community liaison person from Long Plains First Nation has been identified.
