On December 20, 2011, at about 1am, Bloodvein RCMP Detachment were contacted and advised of a single vehicle fatal collision on a winter road, about 10 kms east of the Loon Strait junction, east of Bloodvein FN.
RCMP have since learned that a husband and wife were heading back to Bloodvein First Nation from Pine Falls on the winter road when they hit a patch of ice. The 37-year-old driver lost control of the pick-up truck which rolled and landed on its roof. His wife was able to exit the truck, however, he perished at the scene.
Until help came, the female passenger made a fire to keep warm. It wasn’t until about two hours later when a passing motorist picked her up and brought her to the nursing station in Bloodvein.
37-year-old John Weiss, resident of Bloodvein perished in the collision. This raises the total collision related fatalities to 109 to date this year in RCMP jurisdiction.
RCMP would like to remind the public to use caution when driving on roadways as recent weather temperatures have created some hazardous driving conditions and very slippery sections in some areas.
