Premier Greg Selinger announced that the provincial government is providing $100,000 in funding to the Manitoba Council for International Co-operation (MCIC) for relief work as a result of the devastation caused by the recent tropical storm in the Philippines.
“Our thoughts are with the people of the Philippines at this very difficult time,” said Selinger. “All Manitobans stand in solidarity with our province’s large and close-knit Filipino community as we offer support to friends and family in the Philippines recovering from this devastating natural disaster.”
Early estimates suggest the tropical storm Wahsi has claimed close to 1,000 lives and there is an ongoing high risk of water-borne illness.
Manitobans concerned about Canadian friends and family possibly affected by the disaster can call the federal Department of Foreign Affairs at 1-800-387-3124 or email sos@international.gc.ca.
The provincial government has previously supported relief efforts of the MCIC in response to several international disasters including the devastating earthquakes in Japan, Haiti, Indonesia and Pakistan.
