A pilot program initiated by the Seine River School Division will receive recognition from the Manitoba Association of School Trustees.

According to Superintendent Mike Borgfjord, the division’s education assistance training program has been nominated for the “School Board Innovation Award”.

“This program was a first for the province,” stated Borgfjord. “It improves the service delivered to students and is worth sharing with other divisions.”

The program was launched by the division three years ago to help teacher assistants with the proper training and education that is required to work with students in the division. Two thirds of the division’s 150 education assistants have participated and complete the program.

The program is offered free but follows strict guidelines so that students get a better level of service. The course has been offered in six segments over three years, with the first group to graduate in 2009.

The Seine River School Division will now have to wait until the MAST convention to find out if the innovative program wins the award.
