The Honourable Vic Toews, Regional Minister for Manitoba and Member of Parliament for Provencher, today welcomed news that Canadian beef under 30 months of age can re-enter the South Korean market.
“This is welcome news for Manitoba cattle producers and processors who have waited for nearly a decade for Canadian beef to once again be permitted for export to South Korea,” said Minister Toews.
The South Korean Government today published their approval of the Import Health Requirements (IHRs) and notified the Government of Canada that all certification conditions are in place, meaning exports can commence from the Canadian beef establishments approved for export.
The Canadian beef industry estimates that this restored market access could mean more than $30 million for Canadian producers by 2015.
“The tireless efforts of the Honourable Gerry Ritz, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Foods and the Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade, as well as numerous other government and industry representatives must be commended,” added Minister Toews. “This decision will not only have a significant impact on the ability of Manitoba farmers and producers to access international markets, it will also serve to further strengthen trade relations between our two countries.”
