Steinbach MLA Kelvin Goertzen and R.M. of Hanover Reeve Stan Toews are pleased that a road in the R.M. that had been closed for more than a year after a bridge was burned has now finally reopened this week after the province installed new culverts and repaired the road.
“While it shouldn’t have taken as long as it did, I’m glad for local residents and the Municipality that we were finally able to get this project done,” said Goertzen. “Sometimes it takes a bit of pounding on the table to get things moving and that may have been the case here.”
Goertzen began asking questions in the Manitoba Legislature about the bridge (located on Road 39N between Steinbach and Blumenort) and road closure last spring. While the province indicated that the delay was a result of needed federal approvals, that turned out not to be the case and the repair was finally tendered late last year.
“This was a real inconvenience for local residents and I’m glad that it is now complete. It will make things easier for those living and farming nearby,” said Reeve Stan Toews.
What remained of the old bridge structure was removed and large culverts have now been placed with the road overtop. While the road is open, the surface will be smoothed when weather permits.
