On January 24, 2012, just before 6pm, Stonewall RCMP located an abandoned vehicle that was reported to be involved in a series of break and enters to commercial properties in the Stonewall area.
RCMP conducted a search of the area and located a 41-year-old Winnipeg woman and a 39-year-old man from the RM of Rockwood, who were arrested in connection with the break and enters. Both prisoners were transported to the Stonewall RCMP detachment for processing.
When the male prisoner was provided the opportunity to phone legal counsel in private, he managed to slip out of the detachment through a garage door. This occurred at about 7:15 p.m. Numerous police resources were deployed and the suspect was located in the City of Winnipeg and taken into custody by the Winnipeg Police Service at about 10:30 that evening.
Investigation revealed that an 18-year-old man from the RM of Rockwood had aided in the escape by driving the prisoner to Winnipeg. He is facing charges in relation to the incident. The 39-year-old man is facing a number of charges including escape from lawful custody and numerous counts of break and enter. The 18-year-old man is facing charges of aiding and abetting. The 41-year-old woman was later released without charge.
RCMP are currently working to determine exactly how the man was able to breach security at the detachment and to ensure steps are taken to prevent this occurring again.
Police continue to investigate.
