On January 31, 2012, at about 11pm, Carberry RCMP Detachment, local area Fire Department and EMS were dispatched to a collision involving a train and a semi hauling cattle on Highway 5 north of Carberry.
RCMP report that the semi was heading southbound on Highway 5 when it collided with a westbound train at a controlled railway crossing. The semi was hauling 82 heads of cattle at the time, 11 heads of cattle survived the crash. Several cattle had to be destroyed due to injuries, some remain at large. Two train carts derailed and struck a storage shed at the Viterra elevator. Other than a small diesel leak from the semi, which has since been cleaned up, there is no environmental damages or concerns.
The lone adult male driver of the semi was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police say that heavy fog last night is considered a contributing factor to the collision.
The investigation continues with CN Police.
