A RCMP officer has been cleared of charges in connection with a police involved shooting dating back to March of last year.
At approximately 1:35am, on March 15, 2011, two members of the God’s Lake Narrows RCMP were guarding the scene of a house fire on the God’s Lake First Nation. The members were confronted by an armed male subject. One of the RCMP members discharged his firearm. The male subject was shot and later pronounced deceased at a local nursing station. The male was identified as 52-year-old Paul Leonard Duck, a resident of the God’s Lake First Nation. An autopsy confirmed that Mr. Duck was shot twice and died as a result of his wounds.
An investigation into this matter by a member of the Saskatoon Police Service has now been completed. The investigation and an independent Ontario Crown review have found there is no evidence to support criminal charges. A copy of the investigation has now been forwarded to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Manitoba. An inquest will be held at a later date.
In accordance with Manitoba RCMP policy, an external agency was asked to investigate. A senior member of the SPS conducted the investigation with assistance from the “D” Division RCMP Serious Crimes Unit.
