Over the last few weeks, Manitoba Hydro has received numerous calls from concerned customers regarding phone solicitations from a company selling a “Power Saving Device” that supposedly can save customers a substantial amount on their electricity bills. There have been reports that the phone solicitors are pretending to be Manitoba Hydro employees, and are telling customers that these devices are approved by Hydro. In some cases they are also asking for credit card numbers.

Manitoba Hydro has not approved of such a device, and advises all of its customers to exercise caution and due diligence if they are contacted by anyone selling energy saving devices. Also note that these devices have not been approved by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) or CSA International, meaning the devices may not comply with relevant standards for safety and performance.

Also, customers should note that Manitoba Hydro does not ask for credit card information over the phone.

If any customers receive phone calls of this type, they should report them immediately to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501, or on the web at www.antifraudcentre.ca.
