The Honourable Vic Toews, Member of Parliament for Provencher released a statement in response to a ruling made by the Speaker of the House of Commons.
“Canadians are rightly concerned about the threats posed to our democracy by online bullies who seek to intimidate duly elected Members of Parliament.
Yesterday, Speaker of the House of Commons, Andrew Scheer, found that the threats and attempted intimidation against myself and other Members of Parliament by the cyber group “Anonymous” constituted a prima facie question of privilege.
Shockingly, when the Speaker asked for unanimous consent to refer the matter to Committee for a thorough and public study, the NDP and the Liberals refused.
Members of Parliament therefore voted on whether to send this matter to Committee for a full study.
I believe that we need to get to the bottom of this matter and while I am disappointed by the actions of the NDP and Liberals earlier today, I call on all Members of Parliament to support getting the facts in the open.”
